What is CO2?

Our climate is changing. Experts have been warning of this for some time, and now we are seeing evidence in the weather patterns. Much of the blame for global warming is being placed on the “greenhouse” effect. Greenhouse gases such as CO2 accumulate in the atmosphere in ever increasing concentrations, causing an increasing proportion of solar energy to be trapped in the atmosphere rather than being reflected back into space.

CO2 is largely produced by burning fossil fuels such as oil, gas and coal, for example when they are used in power plants to generate electricity. 19% of this electricity is used worldwide for the purposes of artificial lighting. And around one third of this is consumed by ordinary light bulbs, even though there have been better alternatives available for years.

Reducing CO2 emissions still further

Be honest – are you still using ordinary light bulbs at home? If so, you can easyly make the first move to protect the climate – by switching to energy-saving lamps from OSRAM.

Compared with “normal” light bulbs, OSRAM energy-saving lamps for example save around 80% in energy for the same light output; savings from HALOGEN ENERGY SAVER lamps are around 30%. Over the past few years we have constantly expanded our range of energy-efficient lamps and are pleased to be able to offer our customers a broad spectrum of innovative HALOGEN ENERGY SAVER lamps. Lower energy consumption means lower emissions of CO2.

Background to the CO2 Ticker

The background to the CO2 Ticker is the achievable energy savings with compact fluorescent lamps/energy-saving lamps on one hand and HALOGEN ENERGY SAVER lamps on the other, based on their respective life, in direct comparison with ordinary light bulbs, or relevant predecessor products in the case of low-voltage halogen lamps.

The energy savings per lamp type are multiplied with historic (since the introduction of compact fluorescent lamps with integrated electronic control gear in 1985) and target sales figures. Certain simplifications have had to be made, such as reducing the historic values to main types and linearizing the target sales. The total energy savings calculated in this way are converted into CO2 savings based on an energy mix of 0.5 kg CO2/kWh, forming the basis for the ticker.

The CO2 Ticker contains forward-looking statements and information. These statements are based on our current expectations and certain assumptions, and are therefore subject to certain uncertainties. A variety of factors, many of which are beyond OSRAM’s control, affect the figures used as a basis here. OSRAM does not guarantee the correctness of these figures.
